US charges former Syrian leaders with war crimes

Two senior intelligence officials under the Assad regime in Syria are accused by the United States of war crimes.

The charges were announced Monday via a statement from the US Department of Justice, after being released by the Northern District of Illinois.

The two former Syrian officials are accused of participating in a conspiracy to commit cruel and inhumane treatment of civilian prisoners during the Syrian civil war, including American citizens, according to the indictment.
