President Nikos Christodoulides took part Wednesday in a virtual meeting of leaders from the “Alliance of the Willing,” held to mark four years since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the government said in a written statement.
The teleconference was co‑chaired by the presidents of France and the United Kingdom’s prime minister.
As a country that has experienced an illegal invasion and continues to live under military occupation, Cyprus “fully understands the tragic consequences of the war in Ukraine,” the statement said. The government reaffirmed its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, stressing that internationally recognized borders cannot be altered by force.
Cyprus is closely monitoring ongoing negotiations and the continued involvement of the United States, noting that developments in Ukraine directly affect Europe, which “must play an active role,” the spokesman said.
Ukraine remains a top priority for Cyprus’ presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026. The presidency is working with EU institutions and member states to maintain broad support for Kyiv, including the bloc’s 20th sanctions package, implementation of the European Council’s €90 billion loan agreement reached in December, and momentum in Ukraine’s EU accession talks.
