FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — Cyprus remains gripped by a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring and the risk of heat stress rising sharply.
Meteorologist Iasonas Christodoulou told CyBC – the state broadcaster – that Thursday is expected to be the hottest day of the year, with highs possibly reaching 45°C and remaining elevated through Monday.
Nighttime temperatures are also forecast to stay unusually high, climbing to 26°C.
A nationwide orange alert is in effect from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday. Inland areas could see temperatures hit 43°C, while mountain regions may reach 34°C. A drop is expected starting Tuesday.
The Health Ministry urged the public to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions.
Officials advised avoiding direct sun exposure during midday hours, wearing hats and sunglasses, and drinking plenty of water.
Speaking on CyBC, Labour Inspectorate Director Aristos Oikonomides said outdoor work in inland areas will be suspended during peak hours. In other districts, employers are expected to assess conditions and act accordingly.
