FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has restored half of the damaged infrastructure in areas affected by recent wildfires, replacing more than 240 burned poles and 10 transformers.

The wildfires destroyed a total of 500 poles and 50 transformers, prompting an intensive recovery effort.

EAC crews have also constructed 9 kilometers of medium-voltage overhead network and repaired local grids in the communities of Mallia, Sounio-Zanatzia, Pano Kividon, and Sotiras.

Power remains out in several villages, where generators continue to supply electricity to community centers. These include Vasa Koilaniou, Vouni, Mallia, Arsos, Lofou, Agios Therapon, Pano Kivides, and Agios Ambrosios.

Crews face significant challenges in remote areas, particularly in removing burned poles and installing replacements. To assess inaccessible zones, the EAC deployed drones to map damage and guide restoration efforts.

The government has acknowledged shortcomings in its initial response, with the President issuing a public apology and announcing 12 support measures for affected residents.
