Unions at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus warned that a government plan to compensate households for excess electricity produced by rooftop solar systems could lead to further increases in power prices.

SEPAIK union president Marios Papoutis told RIK radio that the policy would mainly burden consumers who do not have photovoltaic systems. He also questioned whether shifting the cost onto the EAC’s budget would be constitutional.

Papoutis said employee work‑to‑rule measures remain in force and added that unions will decide on next steps after the elections.

EAC board chairman Giorgos Petrou, speaking on the same program, said the authority cannot absorb additional non‑recoverable expenses. He said the board opposes compensating surplus renewable‑energy production and will act jointly with the unions on the issue.

Petrou, however, criticized the unions’ tactics, saying they cannot be invited to dialogue and refuse to attend.
