Cyprus: Vehicle Registrations Decline 4% in First Five Months of 2025

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — The total number of registered motor vehicles in Cyprus fell by 4% in the first five months of 2025, according to new data from the Statistical Service.

From January to May, registrations dropped to 21,012, down from 21,881 in the same period last year.

Passenger saloon cars saw a 5.5% decline, with 16,224 registered, of which 42.4% were new and 57.6% were used vehicles. Rental cars bucked the trend, recording an 18.1% increase to 2,197.

In May alone, however, total registrations rose 13.7% year-over-year to 4,879, including a 11.7% rise in passenger saloon cars, which reached 3,715.

The share of petrol-powered passenger cars dropped from 49.3% to 43.7%, while diesel cars declined to 8.8% from 10%. Conversely, electric car registrations increased from 3.4% in 2024 to 4.7% this year, and hybrid vehicles climbed from 37.3% to 42.9%.

Goods conveyance vehicles showed a slight increase of 0.1%, with light goods vehicles and road tractors registering modest gains, while heavy goods and rental vehicles declined.

The report also noted that mopeds under 50cc saw a sharp decrease, while larger mechanized cycles over 50cc surged by 26% compared to last year.
