The U.N. secretary‑general’s personal envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín, is expected to return to the island on June 6 after a four‑month absence, according to Politis.

The paper, citing its own information, reports that Holguín plans to resume contacts in Cyprus before travelling to Athens and Ankara for further talks. News of her return was first disclosed by Yusuf Kanlı, a Turkish Cypriot journalist based in Ankara, who said Holguín is expected on the island around June 6, with meetings in Ankara planned for mid‑June and consultations in Athens to follow.

According to the report, the aim of these contacts is to determine whether conditions exist for a possible expanded 5+1 meeting involving the guarantor powers. Politis also claims that one of the negotiating sides has confirmed Holguín’s June 6 arrival and suggested her visit is likely linked to an initiative U.N. Secretary‑General António Guterres is expected to undertake in June to bring the parties back to the negotiating table.

Holguín last visited Cyprus on January 28, when she hosted a meeting between Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman and Republic of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides in the U.N. buffer zone. The two leaders have met three times since then.

The paper notes that President Christodoulides has repeatedly said an initiative by Guterres aimed at achieving progress before the end of his term is under development. It adds that “reliable sources” on both sides have confirmed to the newspaper that such an initiative is real.
