A Syrian investigation has confirmed that 1,426 people, most of them civilians, were killed in the coastal city of Baniyas in March, according to local reports.
The violence erupted when armed groups targeted members of Syria’s Alawite minority, a community historically linked to former president Bashar al-Assad. While many Alawites have been accused of loyalty to Assad’s regime, others insist they too suffered under his rule.
Authorities say 298 individuals have been identified as suspects in the attacks against Alawite civilians.
