Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris has said that recent arrests of two police officers are being investigated with full seriousness, stressing that the government remains committed to strengthening discipline, accountability and operational effectiveness within the force.
The cases involve a constable in Larnaca arrested over an alleged assault and a special police officer in Paphos under investigation for a separate incident of assault, both reportedly off duty. The ministry said the matters are being handled by the competent authorities “so they can be brought before justice.”
Fytiris said the state is determined to advance both internal cleansing efforts and the police’s ability to combat crime, adding that behavior inconsistent with the mission and principles of the force “is not tolerated and is addressed within the framework of the law.”
He also praised officers who, through “zeal and commitment,” have recently achieved significant results against illegality and various forms of criminal activity, noting that the vast majority of police personnel carry out their duties with professionalism and responsibility.
Strengthening legality and improving police effectiveness remain key priorities aimed at reinforcing public trust, he said.
