Russia Vows Swift Response to EU Asset Freeze

Russia warned Saturday it will retaliate against the European Union’s decision to freeze Russian assets, calling the move illegal and a violation of international law.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said any confiscation of sovereign assets amounted to disposal without Moscow’s consent. “Our response will not be delayed,” she said.

The Bank of Russia has already filed suit against Brussels‑based depository Euroclear in Moscow’s Arbitration Court, accusing it of unlawful activity tied to the freeze. Zakharova also criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, saying EU leaders were blocking efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine.

She warned the freeze would damage Europe’s financial system and reputation as a reliable trade partner.

On Friday, the EU said Russian assets would remain frozen indefinitely to help fund Ukraine’s military and financial needs. Leaders are expected to discuss using the assets as collateral for “reparation loans” at a summit Thursday.
