After experiencing thousands of small-scale earthquakes earlier this year, Santorini is steadfast in restoring normalcy and reaffirming its place as Greece’s premier tourist destination.

Despite uncertainties surrounding the recent seismic activity, which caused no recorded damage, the island has resumed operations and continues to offer a safe, welcoming environment for visitors.

Thira Mayor Nikos Zorzos, speaking this week, assured that Santorini has fully recovered from the tremors recorded in February. “Santorini is operational and ready to welcome visitors from all over the world,” Zorzos said, emphasizing the island’s resilience.

Santorini, which has made significant strides in its recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, is relying on tourism to spearhead its economic revival.

The first two cruise ships of the season arrived on the last two Sundays of March, signaling the start of what promises to be a busy travel period.

Over 40 cruise ships are scheduled to dock in April alone, and the Union of Cruise Ship Owners has forecast a 10% rise in cruise visitors compared to 2024.

However, not all sectors of the tourism industry share the same optimism.

CHALLENGING YEAR

Hoteliers are bracing for a challenging year, as bookings are currently down about 30% compared to 2024 levels. Industry experts point to lingering concerns over the seismic activity and global economic challenges as factors affecting traveler confidence.

In response, Santorini has launched a new initiative, “Santorini 2025: Year of Promoting and Supporting Authenticity.”

This campaign aims to spotlight the island’s deep cultural heritage and natural beauty while promoting sustainable tourism practices.

By moving away from the pressures of mass tourism, the initiative seeks to preserve Santorini’s fragile ecosystems, encourage mindful travel, and offer a richer, more meaningful experience for visitors.

The campaign emphasizes the island’s historical and cultural significance, encouraging visitors to explore beyond the typical tourist hotspots. Initiatives include promoting lesser-known archaeological sites, supporting local artisans, and offering eco-friendly travel experiences.

Santorini hopes to position itself as a destination where authenticity and sustainability are at the forefront, drawing visitors who seek to connect more deeply with the island’s unique character.
