FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus faces an escalating water crisis that demands urgent attention and action.

The dams are at critically low levels, with water inflows for 2024-2025 among the worst in recorded history, leaving total dam occupancy at a dire 25.4%.

Three consecutive years of drought have exacerbated the problem, straining resources and livelihoods.

The Water Development Department (WDD) has outlined a 28-point plan aimed at addressing the crisis, ranging from immediate measures like mobile desalination units to long-term solutions such as new permanent desalination plants.

Efforts to simplify licensing for small private desalination systems and initiatives to reduce water loss in transport networks are also underway.

While these steps are commendable, the situation remains precarious. For real progress, collective effort is crucial—cooperation from citizens, local authorities, and stakeholders is non-negotiable. Water scarcity isn’t just a government problem; it’s a challenge that impacts everyone.
