An abandoned village in the Limassol district has been purchased by Israeli investors, who have begun work on homes and a camping area.

The newspaper Fileleftheros reported that the long‑deserted village of Trozena is the focus of a large development project. The paper said it verified the information with Limassol Local Government Organization head Yannis Choulouftas, who confirmed that a company has applied to build 60 houses, a campsite and a winery.

Although the village center is open to certain construction activities, the wider area falls within the Natura 2000 environmental protection network. Any development will require a positive assessment from the Environment Department, the report said.

In a separate report, Politis quoted the mukhtar of Arsos, Gerovasa and Trozena, Yannakis Yannaki, as rejecting claims that access to the village has been restricted because of the investment. He said Trozena’s last resident left in 1980 and that an Israeli businessman has since purchased about 70% of the village’s buildings and a significant amount of surrounding land.

Yannaki said rumors that the village church would be demolished were unfounded, adding that the investor has financed maintenance work and that the church remains open to visitors. He also said there is no ban on entering the village, suggesting that people who were asked to leave active construction areas for safety reasons may have misinterpreted the situation.
