Cyprus’ Police Headquarters has issued a new directive tightening rules on when officers may fire their weapons, local media reports.
Politis said the circular, titled “Every Shot With Responsibility,” bans officers from shooting at the tires of fleeing vehicles or firing at suspects during pursuits to force them to stop.
In situations where the use of a firearm is deemed necessary, officers are instructed to aim to wound rather than to kill, the paper reported.
The directive also prohibits firing warning shots into the air.
