Cyprus welcomed the adoption of the European Union’s first Affordable Housing Plan and pledged to help implement it during its presidency of the Council of the EU in 2026, Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou said Wednesday.
The plan, developed collectively at EU level, aims to tackle one of the most pressing needs for millions of Europeans: access to affordable, sustainable and quality housing.
It focuses on four pillars, including boosting housing supply through productivity and innovation, simplifying licensing procedures, mobilizing investment via a pan‑European platform, and addressing short‑term rentals while supporting vulnerable groups.
Ioannou said Cyprus is ready to contribute concrete proposals based on its own “Housing First” policies, particularly to ease housing pressures on young people and low‑ and middle‑income households.
