€1.2 Billion in Russian Assets Frozen in Cyprus Amid EU Sanctions

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The total value of frozen assets belonging to Russians in Cyprus, who are on the EU sanctions list, is reported to be €1.2 billion.

Haravgi newspaper reported that Yorgos Teoharidis, Chairman of the Greek Capital Committee, announced the figure yesterday.

Teoharidis also stated that if these assets are used illegally or transferred to Russia, the matter will be referred to the Cypriot police.

The European Union has imposed a series of sanctions on Russia in response to its actions undermining the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine.

These sanctions, which began in 2014 following the annexation of Crimea and escalated after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, include targeted restrictive measures, economic sanctions, diplomatic measures, and visa restrictions.

The economic sanctions aim to impose severe consequences on Russia’s economy, targeting sectors such as finance, energy, and defense.
