Cyprus and Egypt signed three major commercial agreements to develop the “Cronos” natural gas field located in Block 6 of the Republic of Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone, officials announced Monday.
Cypriot Energy Minister George Papanastasiou and Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi attended the signing ceremony, held on the sidelines of an energy exhibition in Limassol.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Energy, initial gas production from the Cronos field is expected to begin in 2027. The project is seen as a significant step toward strengthening regional energy security and positioning the Eastern Mediterranean as a strategic energy hub.
The agreements were signed between Egypt’s state-owned Natural Gas Holding Company and the Eni-TotalEnergies consortium, which holds the exploration license for Block 6.
