Cyprus’ Joint Rescue Coordination Center said no international flotilla bound for Gaza has entered the territorial waters of the Republic of Cyprus.
It said the center has not received any distress signal requiring activation of search‑and‑rescue procedures, state radio reports.
The passage of the vessels and any related activity took place in international waters about 90 nautical miles off Cyprus, the statement said.
It added that if a distress signal is received for a maritime incident, the center will respond in line with its international obligations.
Asked about the matter, the president of the Republic said Cyprus had not been informed about the operation, adding that the country would respond if assistance is requested.
Meanwhile, the group Global Sumud Cyprus held a protest outside the Presidential Palace on Monday night, calling on the government to intervene to protect civilians taking part in humanitarian missions to the Gaza Strip.
Earlier, it was reported that the Israeli Navy intercepted a flotilla of activists heading toward Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians.
Video posted by the activist organization showed Israeli commandos boarding one of the vessels, which it said was off the coast of Cyprus.
