FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus’ Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeades, urged enhanced international cooperation to address rising maritime security threats during a high-level debate at the UN Security Council on Wednesday.

Commending the Greek presidency for convening the discussion, Vafeades emphasized the increasing role of maritime security in global stability, economic development, and environmental protection.

“As a small island state, Cyprus recognizes the vital role of our seas in ensuring security, prosperity, and sustainable development,” he said.

Vafeades warned of growing security risks at sea, including violations of sovereign rights, illegal maritime activities, and the use of shipping routes for smuggling and human trafficking. He highlighted the Gulf of Aden as an example where disruptions could have global economic and environmental consequences.

The minister called for a “coordinated, holistic, and multidimensional approach” at national, regional, and international levels, reinforcing existing legal frameworks rather than creating new ones. He underscored the importance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the International Maritime Organization’s role in enforcing maritime security.
