NICOSIA, Cyprus — Cyprus could begin importing natural gas once the floating unit “Prometheus” becomes fully operational, Energy Minister Giorgos Papanastasiou said in an interview with the newspaper Kathimerini.
Papanastasiou noted the vessel is 99% complete and expects two essential systems to be installed by October. Pending performance checks, the ship could be ready in the first quarter of 2026, he said.
Regarding the Cyprus–Crete electricity interconnection, known as the GSI project, Papanastasiou said the initiative is feasible despite existing challenges.
He added that Cyprus will release its €25 million contribution to the project’s operator, ADMIE, only when the entire project is implemented — not just the cable construction.
